That Old Moon

That Old Moon

2015. Watercolor and charcoal, 22" by 28" cold-pressed.

I got it in my head to paint this after thinking about how cool it would be to have a huge moon (with a white background instead of a black background) hanging up in my house. I have always loved the moon; painting this picture gave me the opportunity to get to know it a little bit better.

Detail of the Maria

Detail of the Maria

A close up of the Maria (dark spots) of the moon. Each of these spots were thought to be oceans, and were given very beautiful Latin names (My favorites are the Mare Cognitum and the Mare Tranquillitatis-- the Sea That Has Become Known and the Sea of Tranquility).

I also wanted to show the moon as though she were slipping into a lunar eclipse, so the far right of the moon is slightly blushed in pinks and reds. The color is largely imperceptible but gives the entire piece a sense of place and dimension.

Study of Earth

Earth is next! This is a small study that I am working on before starting on the larger piece.  I'm really excited. :)
